FAQ

What is the n-back task?

Items appear one after another, and for each one you say whether it matches the item n steps back. To answer, you have to hold the last n items in mind and keep updating them, which is why it's used to train working memory (the ability to hold and work with information for a short time).

How do I answer in 2-back?

Press Match if the item is the same as the one 2 steps back, or Different if it isn't. The first 2 items have nothing to compare with, so they're a warm-up: press Next to move on. The 20 trials start from the 3rd item. On a keyboard, A = Match and L = Different.

What's the difference between Grid and ABC?

In Grid, you remember which of the 9 squares in a 3×3 grid lit up. In ABC, you remember which of 8 letters appeared. They use different kinds of memory (spatial vs. verbal), so many people are better at one than the other. ABC 3-back is the hardest setting.

Does the sequence change every day?

Yes. It changes at midnight Japan time. About 30% of the trials are matches. On the same day and version, everyone gets the same 20 trials.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

By the number of correct answers (out of 20), most first; ties go to the faster time. You only need a nickname, up to 30 submissions a day. The server rebuilds the sequence and scores your answers itself, so the score you report isn't used.
