FAQ

How do you play Dots and Boxes?

Players take turns drawing one line between two neighboring dots. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box claims it and draws another line. When every box is filled the game ends, and the player with more boxes wins.

Any tips?

Drawing the third side of a box hands it to your opponent. Early on, avoid making third sides; in the endgame, the game comes down to which chains you give away. The key is not to hand your opponent long chains.

How strong is the computer?

It uses the basic strategy: always take a box when it can and avoid drawing third sides. It doesn't count chains in the endgame, so once you learn to count chains you can beat it.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

Biggest box margin at the end (yours minus the computer's) first; ties go to the shorter game time. You only need a nickname, and you can submit up to 30 times a day per size. The server replays your game, including the computer's replies, to verify it.
