FAQ
Who is this for?
Japanese learners who can read hiragana and are starting on kanji, and children in Japan in grades 1–2. The Grade 1 level only uses the 80 kanji taught in first grade.
Which kanji are included?
The 80 kanji taught in grade 1 and the 160 taught in grade 2, from the official list of kanji by school grade published by Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT). Each kanji has 1–2 example words, and the readings are limited to those taught by that grade.
Where do the example words come from?
They were written for this site, not copied from textbooks or workbooks. Only the list of characters (which kanji is taught in which grade) comes from the official document.
What happens if I get one wrong?
There's no X. The button with the correct reading lights up green, and the whole word's reading and meaning are shown before the next question. A run with a mistake can't be added to the leaderboard.
How is the leaderboard ranked?
Only runs with all 10 questions correct can be submitted, ranked by the fastest time. Each level has its own leaderboard. The set changes at midnight Japan time and is the same 10 questions for everyone on the same day and level. Random practice gives different questions each time and isn't recorded.
