FAQ
How do you play?
Place your fleet on your board, then fire at the enemy's waters one cell at a time. Hitting a cell with a ship is a hit; hitting every cell of a ship sinks it. You fire first, then you and the computer alternate one shot each. Sink every enemy ship to win.
Are there rules for placing ships?
Ships go in a straight line (across or down) and can't touch any other ship, including diagonally. On 10×10 there are 5 ships of 5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 cells; on 8×8 there are 4 ships of 4, 3, 3 and 2 cells. "Auto place" can set up your fleet for you.
Why are the cells around a sunk ship revealed automatically?
Since ships can't touch, there can't be another ship next to a sunk one. Those cells aren't worth firing at, so they're automatically marked as misses. The computer fires with the same knowledge, so it's a level playing field.
How strong is the computer?
It plays by the book: after a hit it tries the neighboring cells, after two hits in a row it follows that line, and with no leads it fires on a checkerboard pattern. The order of its shots changes every day.
How is the leaderboard ranked?
Only wins are recorded. Fewest shots first; ties go to the shorter time. Losses and "Random practice" games can't be submitted. Your fleet placement and the cells you fired at are sent to the server, which replays the game, including the computer's return fire, to verify it.
